We have set out to review the major players in VR entertainment for you. Our aim is to capture the vast leaps made recently on the technology side and to give you a comparison of the value for the buck – or euro if you will…

To get an idea about the basic anatomy of an advanced VR device, have a look at this short instruction video from Oculus.

This review also takes into account one of the biggest qualms raised with respect to VR — namely its affordability, which has been previously treated extensively here in VR Sassy.

We have included each major VR device that we consider to be a significant player on the market.

We hope that this review of VR headsets will prove helpful in guiding you in selecting the right kind of device for the budget you are comfortable spending.

VR devices' price point is a key prerequisite to greater market penetration
Up until recently, the cost of VR devices has been a stumbling block for mass adoption

Samsung Gear VR

At USD 70.60 at Amazon, Samsung Gear VR is one of the best and cheapest ways to experience virtual reality.

The precondition is to own a Samsung Galaxy smartphone. This is still an Oculus-powered device, which means that

Samsung has turned to Facebook, an industry trail-blazer with enough commitment and resources to move the VR industry ahead.

The headset features a USB-C connector that hooks directly into the Samsung Galaxy phones, going as far back as the S-6 line.

Support of a wide range of devices is possible thanks to a nifty micro USB connection adapter. Once, the phone is in place,

the Oculus Gear VR app automatically launches and guides the user to connect the controller.

Gear VR performs smoothly and the controller helps with the navigation and adds to the interactivity.

Overall, Gear VR is light and comfortable and when used with Galaxy S8, allows for 101 degrees of viewing.

Oculus GO

Oculus Go is a simple and very portable VR device designed for use at home, on a plane or for watching Netflix, if you so desire.

The two of its best features are that it is self-contained – does not require a smartphone to run – and has an affordable price point of $199.

Oculus Go
Oculus Go, when released in 2018, was touted as the democratizer of VR

The headset delivers an immersive experience that is almost as good as with Oculus Rift, its high-end relative.

Also, much like phone-driven VR headsets, Oculus GO offers three degrees of freedom experience (3DOF).

This means you can expect realistic VR effects when you rotate or tilt your head.It integrates audio inside the plastic arms that have slits that house the speakers, so you won’t need to fiddle with earbuds.

On the whole, the GO is a solid-performing headset, with a better pixel resolution than its costlier cousin, the PC-tethered Oculus Rift.

Oculus Quest

Poised to become the mobile (no PC needed) game arcade of choice, the Quest is bound to give its gaming competitors,

the XBox and Playstation, a run for their money. It is a standalone VR mobile device that does not require a PC, console, or smartphone to run.

Quest offers 6 degrees of freedom  (6DOF) and dual hand movement, ideal for games built for full room experience.

Oculus Quest VR device Oculus Quest to be released in early 2019 is a mid-range VR device

In terms of the built-in software, Quest uses Snapdragon 835 SoC processor, commonly used in many mid-range mobile phones.

Experiencing the Quest is pure pleasure – you can walk around a solid virtual reality space without the need for any outside sensors or cameras.

Given the fact that the Quest is earmarked for release in spring 2019, the one outstanding question that is on everybody’s mind is the expected battery life.

The Quest retail price in the US will be $399 and in the U.K £303.92.

Oculus Rift

Since Oculus Rift launched in 2016 as the top-of-the-line VR device, Facebook has slashed the price of the headset to US$399.

The price drop puts it on par with the recently introduced Oculus Quest – which on one hand comes with a weaker processor than what a PC gaming rig can muster but makes up for it with mobility (6 degrees of freedom).

The Rift is positioned on the VR market as a device for PC gaming. It is especially suitable for those willing to shell out the money for a high-end graphics card.

Oculus Rift VR device

Oculus Rift is the high-end device popular among gamers

Given the fact that it is a tethered device, the Rift requires a wired connection to a PC.

This is to ensure that it has enough power to drive two 1080 x 1200 resolution images to each lens housed inside the headset.

Needless to say, to squeeze the Rift for its full potential, you’re going to need a top-of-the-line gaming PC.

The result will be unparalleled experience (perhaps save the HTC Vive reviewed below).

The downside of performance will be having to be tethered to your PC rig. You are going to make the call based on the demands of the gaming

the software you intend to use versus the degrees of freedom you desire.

HTC Vive

Even though the later start in the game than its major competitor, the Oculus Rift, in many ways the Vive delivers a more comprehensive package.

Geared mainly toward the gaming community, with Vive it applies that if you have the budget, it is hands down the best virtual reality experience on the market.

HTC Vive HTC Vive VR is a high-end VR device especially suited for gaming

Designed to be the gamers’ paradise, Vive requires a high-end GPU to run.

Even though its minimum system requirements are a tad lighter than the Oculus Rift’s, you’ll still need a good graphics card and a recent processor.

So, if you decide to go with HTC Vive,  make sure that your gaming PC is powerful enough to do the job.

The Vive comes with two screens with a 1080 x 1200 resolution and requires a very high frame rate.

To run it for gaming you need about three times the power you would at 60fps on a Full HD monitor.

The device ships with specialized controllers, allowing you to walk around and interact with virtual worlds of your choosing.

Google Daydream

Daydream is a stand-alone VR device that is considerably smaller, lighter, and more portable than Samsung’s Gear VR.

Google Daydream’s greatest advantages are that it works with more non-Google Android phones than any other VR platform and its favorable price point.

Additionally, the new generation of Daydream comes with an expanded field of view (FOV) from 90 degrees to 100 degrees.

That puts it on a par with Samsung Gear VR, which boasts a 101-degree FOV.

This improves how immersive the scene can be and the overall sharpness of the detail.

Google Dream Google Daydream VR supports more non-Google Android phones  than any other VR device

The front flap where you secure any Google Daydream-enabled smartphone is held in place by an elastic band secured at the top of the headset.

The second generation Daydream retails at Amazon for 99 USD, which makes it a good deal, especially for those who already own an Android device.

PSVR – PlayStation VR

The PlayStation VR was launched in 2016 and is now the best-selling high-end VR headset of all times!

According to the data on VR shipment figures for 2018, it has a 43% market share.

This is certainly due to the fact that prior ownership of a PS4 makes it a very tempting purchase.

As such, PlayStation VR is an affordable entry-level headset to VR. Even though many of the experiences to be enjoyed on it aren’t as crisp

as the ones found on the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, it remains an undisputed leader.

Watching content on the PlayStation 4 VR is just as simple as any other device, except that you need to download each scene and side-load them onto the unit (alternatively, store them on external connected storage).

The most reliable way of watching content on PS VR is via LittlStar media player app (available from

the PlayStation Store). This is because the default PlayStation Media Player doesn’t support the full range of VR options.
